Most of the Jews at the time of Jesus' life on earth did not believe on Him
(Jno. 12:37-43).

Yes, I think you are on the right track.  Some of the Jews made a
distinction between "the prophet" to come (cf. Deut. 18:18-19) and the
Christ (see John 1:19-21; Jno. 7:40-41).  Some were willing to see Jesus as
a prophet but not as the Messiah.  Of course, "the prophet" predicted by
Moses and the Messiah were one and the same and fulfilled in Jesus Christ
(see Acts 3:22-26).
